by Jamie Thompson, SEIU Local 1877
After a long battle, Aviation Safeguards workers won their union at airports in Oakland and San Jose, joining thousands of airport workers across the state of California in SEIU Local 1877-AIRPORT WORKERS UNITED. Victory was achieved through widespread and ongoing support from ally organizations. Leading the charge of community support were EBASE and the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ).

Putting Oakland to Work
A new report, titled "Putting Oakland to Work: A Comprehensive Strategy to Create Real Jobs for Residents," published November 16th by EBASE and the Oakland NetWork for Responsible Development (ONWRD) shows that extreme income disparity, sky-rocketing housing costs, extensive joblessness, and poverty-level wages threaten Oakland's economic stability and resident prosperity. "Putting Oakland to Work" also shows how the city can lift its residents out of poverty with a new economic development strategy focused on creating quality jobs.
