Oakland Mayor Calls for 10,000 More Jobs
On May 3, 2007, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums announced an initiative to create 10,000 new jobs in the next five years. The initiative, the Oakland Partnership, will bring together business, labor, government and education sectors in a collaborative process to create an economic development strategy. The Oakland NetWork for Responsible Development (ONWRD), a broad coalition convened by EBASE, is looking forward to working with the Mayor to craft an economic development strategy that will generate high road jobs in Oakland.

New Coalition Campaigns for Clean and Safe Ports
The Port of Oakland is the region’s economic engine, but the port trucking industry is polluting our neighborhoods, abusing workers and not creating the kind of job opportunities that Oakland needs. The Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports in Oakland is campaigning to transform the trucking industry and hold the Port of Oakland accountable for its impacts on workers, neighboring communities and public health.

University of California Workers Win Equity Fight! Congratulations, AFSCME Local 3299!
On May 22, 2007, after a year-and-a-half of organizing and mass actions, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Santa Barbara custodians declared victory, winning substantial wage increases! Also part of the equity fight, UC Irvine groundskeepers won their in-sourcing campaign! The custodian pay equity campaign helped push UC to settle additional increases for AFSCME low-wage workers statewide – marking a step toward statewide equity in its contract.
